Mount Washington is committed to preserving and enhancing the natural resources that are at the core of what makes
Mount Washington such a special place. We have a long history of being good stewards of the land on which we operate, but we wanted to take another step to help improve our environment.
Vancouver Island
Marmot
The Vancouver Island Marmot is a remarkable animal. It is endemic to Canada - one of only a small handful of mammals to occur in this country and nowhere else. Unfortunately, it is also Critically Endangered. In 2004, fewer than 30 remained in the wild. Recovery efforts by the Foundation and our partners have been restoring the population.

Black Bears
Vancouver Island is estimated to be home to about 7,000 black bears, which marks it as the densest population for these bears. They can be found pretty well anywhere on Vancouver Island, but there are definite clusters in places like the Pacific Rim National Park!

Pets
Pets and domestic animals must be on a leash and under control at all times and are not allowed offleash in the Nordic and Alpine areas . Dogs must be on a leash at all times in the Forbidden Plateau core area (Paradise Meadows). During the summer and winter seasons, dogs must be on a leash and are not allowed in the Bike Park and only on designated Nordic Trails. You are responsible for their behaviour and must dispose of their excrement.
Backcountry areas are not suitable for dogs or other pets due to wildlife issues and the potential for problems with bears.

Environment
Principle #1 Planning, Design and Construction
In planning and designing trails, base areas and associated facilities, we have the opportunity to explore ways of integrating our operations into natural systems and addressing short and long-term environmental impacts to natural resources. There may also be opportunities to address past disturbances from historical uses that have occurred in the area and mitigate the unavoidable impacts from future ones.
