If you've driven up the Strathcona Parkway to Mount Washington in the last couple of weeks you can't help but think that winter is closing in, and closing in fast! With only weeks before opening day on December 10th, the mountain is busy preparing for their upcoming hiring blitz that will take place this Saturday, November 6.
Mount Washington is one of Vancouver Island's largest employers, operating with a peak winter staffing level of over 800 employees. Currently, the mountain has hundreds of positions to fill in various departments.
“Our job fair is a great opportunity to find work on the mountain,” explains resort HR Coordinator Owen Embree. “Attendees will be able to speak directly to departmental supervisors and in some cases, receive their initial job interview that same day.”
Mount Washington hopes to attract applicants who possess a passion for delivering exceptional customer service. A great attitude, high energy level, and friendly demeanor are all qualities mountain representatives are looking for when screening candidates. Naturally, it also helps to have a pre-existing passion for the snowsports industry.
The list of job postings for the upcoming season are long and varied and show just how multi-faceted ski resort operations really are. Opportunities are available for those with a variety of skill levels. Departments seeking employees include: Food and Beverage, Mountain Operations, Tubing Park, Snow School, and Retail Operations. And to think that this is just the tip of the employment iceberg at the mountain!
The snow, fresh mountain air, free season pass, and active lifestyle are all obvious perks of working at Mount Washington. On top of the free skiing and boarding, the mountain boasts a comprehensive perks and benefits program for all employees. These include complimentary staff transportation services from the Comox Valley to the mountain, free snow school lessons, and food and retail discounts. Plus, all staff are treated to legendary Mount Washington staff functions throughout the winter.
To get a better idea of what’s currently being offered by the mountain, Embree suggests visiting hr.mountwashington.ca. “We have an extensive job listings page where you can shop around for different positions. You can apply for the positions that interest you and then upload your resume, it’s that easy.”
Mount Washington is only hosting one job fair this fall so make sure you don't miss it! The fair begins at 10am and runs to 3pm and will take place in the Whiskey Jack conference room in the Alpine Lodge. Have copies of your resume in hand, bring your passion for snow, and you could be the latest super-stoked mountain employee!
