Skier Ability Levels

Level 1

Ability Check for Programs at Mount Washington Discover Skiing Lessons (First time skiers) Our programs are dynamic and fun, the way skiing and riding is supposed to be. Please use as a guide only.

  • Shows balanced stance in a straight run
  • Rides a lift with confidence
  • Can consistently snowplow stop
  • Has the ability to turn skis left or right but not able to link turns

Terrain: Green
Goal: Link controlled turns and rides the magic carpets

Level 2

Ability Check for Programs at Mount Washington Our programs are dynamic and fun, the way skiing and riding is supposed to be. Please use as a guide only.

  • Can turn left and right and consistently link turns
  • Cautious skier
  • Familiar with riding a lift
  • Shows increasing speed and coordination of movements

Terrain: Green runs on Hawk and Easy Acres
Goal: Building confidence on green terrain and improve the linking of turns

Level 3

  • Shows speed and confidence on green runs
  • Starting to parallel turn on green runs, yet cautious on easy blue runs
  • Matching skis at end of turn on blue runs
  • Introduction to pole plant to increase coordination of movements
  • Introduction of steering (edging, pressure control, pivoting) skills for better ski performance

Terrain: Green and blue runs on Hawk chair
Goal: Develop skills for parallel turns on intermediate terrain

Level 4

Ability Check for Programs at Mount Washington Our programs are dynamic and fun, the way skiing and riding is supposed to be. Please use as a guide only.

  • Skis parallel confidently on all blue runs
  • Venturing on to un-groomed terrain (bumps, powder) and some black diamonds, but lacks confidence in challenging situations
  • Experimenting with different turn shapes on blue terrain including Green Terrain Park
  • Steering (edging, pressure control, pivoting) skills present on all intermediate terrain

Terrain: Blue runs on Eagle, Whisky Jack and Sunrise Chairs
Goal: Develop skills for confidence turns on advance terrain and turn shapes

Level 5

Ability Check for Programs at Mount Washington Our programs are dynamic and fun, the way skiing and riding is supposed to be. Please use as a guide only.

  • Skis parallel confidently on groomed Black runs
  • Venturing on to un-groomed terrain (bumps, powder) and some black diamonds, but lacks confidence in expert situations
  • Steering (edging, pressure control, pivoting) skills present on all Advanced terrain
  • Experimenting with different turn shapes on black terrain including Stomping Ground Terrain Park

Terrain: Black runs on Eagle, Boomerang and Sunrise Chairs
Goal: Develop skills for confidence turns on Expert terrain and turn shapes

Snowboard Ability Levels

Level 1

Ability Check for Programs at Mount Washington First Time Rider (Discover Snowboarding) Our programs are dynamic and fun, the way skiing and riding is supposed to be. Please use as a guide only.

  • Never ever ridden before.

Terrain: Green Terrain.
Goal: Speed control through side slipping on your toe or heel edge.

Level 2 – Beginner Rider

  • Has ridden once or twice before.
  • Can side slip easily with direction across on the easiest of green runs. (ie. power pendulum)

Terrain: Green Runs.
Goal: To be able to link toe and heel edge turns.

Level 3 – Novice Rider

  • Can confidently link turns on all green runs.

Terrain: Ride all green and easy blue runs.
Goal: To be able to confidently ride on all blue runs while linking turns.

Level 4 – Intermediate Rider

  • Can do fluid linked turns on blue runs at moderate speeds.

Terrain: All blue runs and/or Small Terrain Park.
Goal: To get more performance from the board while exploring more challenging terrain. To learn basic freestyle mechanics.

Level 5 – Advanced Rider

  • Aggressive riding on all blue runs. Likes to explore steeper and varied terrain.

Terrain: All blue runs and easy blacks.
Goal: To ride switch on all blue terrain. Venture into Black Park, moguls and challenging terrain.
